Paper Talk: Man Utd, Tottenham in battle for £50m Prem keeper

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho

Manchester United and Tottenham are ready to do battle for a £50million Premier League keeper this summer, while Liverpool are inviting summer bids for a key squad man – both in Sunday’s Paper Talk.

UNITED, SPURS IN FIGHT FOR NEW NO.1

Manchester United and Tottenham have both registered an interest in Burnley star Nick Pope, but have been told the goalkeeper would cost a whopping £50million.

United have put Pope on their wish list ahead of what they expect to be a busy summer. However, they will be rivalled by Spurs, who have a keeper conundrum emerging.

The Red Devils are prepared to sell David de Gea at the end of the season, with Paris St-Germain already showing interest.

The Spaniard earns £375,000-a-week, but has form has been steadily decliining over a number of years.

Dean Henderson appears to be the heir apparent at Old Trafford. But there remain concerns that he is not yet ready to take the role full time.

To that end, a report in the Daily Star states that United are taking a closer look at Burnley star Pope – who would cost £50m.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a rival in his bid to land the England man, with Jose Mourinho also on the prowl.

Tottenham are in a similar boat to United with club skipper Hugo Lloris, who has proved more error-strewn in recent times.

The 34-year-old World Cup winner is in the final stages of his career, hence Spurs’ need to look to the future.

Pope has enjoyed another outstanding campaign for the Clarets and looks a certainty for Gareth Southgate’s Eueo 2020 squad this summer.

There are even calls for the 28-year-old to be installed as Gareth Southgate’s No.1 ahead of Jordan Pickford this summer.
