Leeds United are reportedly ready to reignite their pursuit of Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who is seen as a perfect fit for Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play.
Bielsa has been trying to find another midfielder for several months. Udinese’s Rodrigo De Paul was their top target last summer, before their attention turned to Michael Cuisance. The latter deal ultimately collapsed and De Paul seems out of Leeds’ price range.
Therefore, if they are to reinforce that position in the summer, they may need to look for someone else. Nandez is a player they have been monitoring for some time.
Reports of their interest date back to Bielsa’s first season in charge at Elland Road. Then, they made an effort to sign him in September 2020. Now, it appears Bielsa is determined to finally land the Uruguay international.
According to CentoTrentuno, Bielsa has made Nandez a top target for Leeds and believes he would be an ideal fit in his system.
While their approach in September was unsuccessful, the contrasting plights of both clubs since could give Leeds more optimism. Cagliari have been in a relegation battle in Serie A, whereas Leeds have consolidated their position in the Premier League.
That may give Leeds a stronger negotiating stance. Cagliari have climbed out of the relegation zone after finding some form recently, but are only in 17th on goal difference. If they do get sucked down into the second tier, they would likely have to sell Nandez.
There will be no shortage of interest in the 25-year-old. He has also been mentioned as a target for AS Roma.
But Leeds have already established a relationship with Cagliari thanks to respective owners Andrea Radrizzani and Tommaso Giulini. After making a bid last summer, the Whites are now expected to again.
The report from CentoTrentuno hints that Leeds might have more success this time if they present the same offer again. They put €30m on the table for Nandez last summer.
Cagliari could be more inclined to accept this now, so Leeds are said to be ready to stump up that sum. The conditions appear to be finally in place for the deal to go through.
Leeds’ offer has not been sent yet, but CentoTrentuno think it will be in the summer. If successful, they will then need to agree personal terms with Nandez and hope he passes a medical.
But it certainly seems there is a better chance of them signing him in 2021 than there ever has been.
Leeds learn fee for defender
Another area Leeds are looking to strengthen is at full-back. They have been pleased with Stuart Dallas’ adaptation to the Premier League this season but will need to replace Ezgjan Alioski at the end of his contract.
One name they are looking at is Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico. The Argentina international could be ready to finally switch to the Premier League.
According to the Daily Mail, his asking price has reduced to just £13m. However, that in turn has put Manchester City on alert as well.
Therefore, Leeds will have to fight hard to convince Tagliafico that they would be the right destination.
