Gerrard should unleash Morelos vs Saints

Rangers will be looking to stay on track to win another trophy this season as they prepare for another big game at Ibrox on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s side face St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup quarter-final and in order to give his side the best chance of progression, the manager should restore Alfredo Morelos to his starting line up.

The Colombian, who reportedly earns £32.5k per week at Rangers, was left on the bench for the draw against Callum Davidson’s side in midweek, with Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe preferred up front.

Should Morelos start?

However, neither particularly impressed and given that Rangers squandered a number of chances to make the game safe before the late equaliser, Gerrard will be hoping his side are more composed in front of goal against the same opposition this weekend.

Therefore, it would make sense to recall Morelos, as the 24-year-old has managed 14 goals and eight assists in all competitions so far this season, and has averaged an impressive 7.19 rating for his performances.

He is the joint-top scorer with James Tavernier for Gerrard’s side in the Premiership so far this season so clearly knows where the back of the net is, and he could prove to be the game-changer for the 40-year-old manager on Sunday, after a frustrating result in midweek.

Since joining from HJK Helsinki in 2017, the striker has gone on to contribute 93 goals and 42 assists in just 178 appearances, whilst he also broke Ally McCoist’s record to become the all-time leading scorer for Rangers in Europe.

One of those goals came in a 1-0 win against Lech Poznan at Ibrox earlier in the season, with Morelos’ performance lauded by Polish journalist Głos Wielkopolski after the game, as he labelled him “Rangers’ biggest star”, whilst also dubbing him the “executioner of Kolejorz” after his match-winning display.

Certainly, Morelos is much more ruthless in front of goal than the likes of Itten and Roofe, so Gerrard should unleash him against St Johnstone on Sunday in the hope that he can succeed where his teammates failed on Wednesday night.
