Does Griffiths have a future at Celtic?

Does Griffiths have a future at Celtic?

This summer will welcome a new dawn for Celtic. No longer will it be a club which houses Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell.

That can only be a good thing for a Hoops side which has witnessed a completely wretched season.

They have surrendered their grasp on the Premiership title and could now be staring down the barrel of a mass exodus. Interest in Odsonne Edouard has been well documented but it’s another forward who is now having his patience tested in Glasgow.

That happens to be a certain Leigh Griffiths. The forward has been a loyal servant to the Bhoys down the years but, after a lack of football, has been left out of the latest Scotland squad.

It would appear that any hopes he had of featuring at their first major tournament since the 1990s is very quickly being extinguished.

To quote Frank McAvennie, Griffiths is an “enigma”.

Does Griffiths deserve more starts?

Often described as the best finisher at the club, it feels that ultimately they will soon have to part ways. Neil Lennon seemingly didn’t get on well with the Scot too often and he’s yet to earn a start under John Kennedy.

The 30-year-old hasn’t started for Celtic since he was taken off at half-time in the defeat to St Mirren at the end of January. Since then, he’s seen Albian Ajeti, Patryk Klimala and Ryan Christie all start ahead of him in central areas.

It’s a peculiar tale that he’s not playing. After all, Celtic have since failed to score against both Ross County and Dundee United.

It is telling, however, that he’s not featuring as often as he’d like. Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan documented a supposed row between Griffiths and Lennon at the start of the season over his weight and condition.

Clearly, the Scotsman has not been able to prove his fitness in recent months. He has played just six minutes under Kennedy and, in that time, spurned a decent headed opportunity against Dundee United two weeks ago.

It speaks volumes that, even during a tough and arduous season, Griffiths isn’t getting any game-time. The £15,000-per-week striker has netted 122 times for the Hoops; you don’t amass that kind of tally without having something about you.

However, his lack of minutes and indeed his failure to even get in the Scotland side tells you that something isn’t quite right at Parkhead.

Edouard may well be leaving this summer but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Griffiths follows suit; now feels like the ideal time to depart. Celtic simply have no use for him at the moment.

AND in other news, 0 starts under Kennedy: Celtic must unleash £11k-p/w beast with “explosive power”…
